Lace Wallet Extension — Getting Started | Official Guide
Welcome to the official getting started guide for the Lace Wallet Extension. This document is designed to walk you through the installation, setup, and basic usage of the Lace Wallet, the premier non-custodial wallet for the Cardano ecosystem. Whether you are a seasoned decentralized finance (DeFi) user or a newcomer to blockchain technology, this guide will provide you with the essential knowledge to manage your digital assets securely.
1. Introduction to Lace
Lace is a cutting-edge, light wallet extension for the Cardano blockchain. Developed by IOG (Input Output Global), Lace is designed to bridge the gap between the traditional web experience and the decentralized world. It allows users to manage native ADA, Cardano Native Tokens (CNTs), and interact with decentralized applications (dApps) directly from their browser.
Key Features:
Non-Custodial: You have full control over your private keys.
Multi-Asset Support: Send, receive, and store ADA and thousands of native tokens.
dApp Connectivity: Seamlessly connect to Cardano dApps via web3-compatible interfaces (e.g., using window.cardano).
Hardware Wallet Integration: Supports Ledger and Trezor for enhanced security.
Multi-Account Management: Easily switch between multiple wallet accounts.
2. System Requirements & Compatibility
Before proceeding with the installation, ensure your system meets the following requirements:
Browser Support: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Brave, or any Chromium-based browser.
Operating System: Windows, macOS, or Linux.
Storage: Minimal local storage required (the wallet is a lightweight extension).
Internet Connection: Required for transaction broadcasting and blockchain synchronization.
3. Installation Guide
Follow these steps to install the Lace Wallet Extension:
Visit the Official Store:
Navigate to the official browser extension store for your browser (e.g., Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons).
Important: Always verify the publisher and check user ratings to avoid phishing extensions. The official Lace extension is published by IOG.
Add to Browser:
Click "Add to Browser" or "Install."
Confirm the permissions request. Lace requires permissions to read and write data on websites you visit to facilitate dApp connectivity.
Pin the Extension:
Once installed, pin the Lace icon to your browser toolbar for easy access.
4. Setting Up Your Wallet
Upon launching the extension for the first time, you will be greeted by the setup wizard.
Option A: Create a New Wallet
Set a Password: Create a strong password for your wallet. This password encrypts your data locally and is required to unlock the extension.
Backup Your Recovery Phrase: You will be presented with a 24-word recovery phrase (also known as a seed phrase).
Warning: Write this phrase down on paper and store it in a secure location. Do not store it digitally (screenshots, cloud storage, notes apps).
You will be asked to verify your phrase by selecting the words in the correct order.
Security Check: Complete the verification process to ensure you have correctly recorded your phrase.
Option B: Restore an Existing Wallet
Select "Restore Wallet."
Enter your existing 15-, 24-, or 25-word recovery phrase.
Set a new password for this extension instance.
Choose your wallet type (e.g., Shelly, Byron) if prompted.
5. Dashboard Overview
Once logged in, you will see the main dashboard:
Balance Panel: Displays your total ADA balance and the fiat equivalent (USD/EUR).
Assets Tab: Shows a list of all tokens (ADA and CNTs) in your wallet.
Transaction History: Displays a record of incoming and outgoing transactions.
Send/Receive Buttons: Quick access for transferring funds.
Settings Gear: Access security settings, network preferences, and hardware wallet configuration.
6. Basic Operations
A. Receiving Funds
Click the "Receive" button.
Copy your wallet address or scan the QR code.
Provide this address to the sender. Your address can be reused, but for privacy, Lace generates a new address automatically after each use.
B. Sending Funds
Click the "Send" button.
Enter the recipient's wallet address.
Enter the amount of ADA or select a specific token to send.
Check the transaction fee (miner fee).
Enter your wallet password to confirm the transaction.
Wait for the transaction to be processed on the Cardano blockchain.
C. Staking
Navigate to the "Staking" section.
Choose a Stake Pool that aligns with your preferences (e.g., saturation, pledge, fees).
Delegate your ADA. Note that your ADA remains in your wallet and is never locked.
Start earning rewards automatically every epoch (5 days).
7. Advanced Features (dApps & Web3)
Lace integrates with the Cardano ecosystem to allow interaction with dApps.
Connecting: When you visit a Cardano dApp, the website will prompt you to connect your wallet. Lace will display a pop-up requesting permission to share your public wallet address.
Signing: To execute transactions on dApps (e.g., trading tokens on a decentralized exchange), you will be prompted to "Sign" the transaction. Review the details carefully before signing.
Security: Always verify the contract address and transaction data before approving. Malicious dApps may attempt to drain funds.
8. Security Best Practices
Password Strength: Use a combination of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and special characters.
Phrase Protection: Your recovery phrase is the ultimate key to your funds. Never share it with anyone. IOG will never ask for your phrase.
Automatic Lock: Configure the wallet to lock after a set period of inactivity.
Hardware Wallet: For significant holdings, consider using a hardware wallet (Ledger/Trezor) via the Lace "Connect Hardware Wallet" option.
Updates: Keep your browser and the Lace extension updated to the latest version for security patches.
9. Troubleshooting & Support
Transaction Stuck: Check the network status at Cardano Explorer. You may need to resubmit the transaction.
Balance Not Showing: Ensure the extension is properly synchronized. Sometimes a browser restart resolves the issue.
Official Support: IOG provides support through the official Lace website and community channels. Beware of scammers impersonating support agents on social media.
